I was under the impression it was needed to create the link between the 
loopback device and file before mounting it.  [From what you've just said 
this in not the case - so I just reread the man page for mount and I see you 
can do it that way - Thanks]

This was because my working computer is all reiserfs apart from a VFAT 
partition and I was wanting to unpack the disk to see how to add networking 
and rsync and a couple of simple shell scripts (I am looking to be able to 
walk up to a windows only machine and back it up or restore it over the 
network to a central server )
