I use a combination of a one-time image and regular backups of the files
that can be accessed. So far it seems to work well enough, knock on wood.

Don't. Don't trust anything about ntfs under linux. It is not widely
worked on or tested, and the filesystem specs are not documented or known,
in the first place.

The combination lets you have the disaster image *plus* files if you need
them. Restoring is a matter of replacing the image, then replacing all
the files it will let you write, and crossing your fingers.

Surely someone sells NT backup solutions?
