First, sym53c8xx is built into the tomsrtbt defaults, it should just work.

You shouldn't need to load a module at all, period.  There may be something
else wrong (like a non-probed IO port).

Second, you cannot "copy your kernel to bz2bzImage".

You have to do "make bz2bzImage".

Which means you must have patched the kernel to support it.
