I'm not quite sure what your problem is, sure, there are several ways.

If the hard drive *has a linux distribution installed*, you are usually
best off using chroot, something like:

        chroot /mnt/point/hdx9 /sbin/lilo

And actually running the lilo from the installed distribution.

But nothing stops you from using the one from the ram disk, of course,
you must then *use the boot.b from tomsrtbt*!  Maybe that is the error
you are getting, you cannot mix and match the tomsrtbt lilo executable
with the distributions boot.b file, so you cannot use -r without first
pointing to the correct boot.b file.
