That's weird -  Git shouldn't require Ruby nor gdiff by any means.
People regularly use it on BSDs without any problems, AFAIK; by now,
it should be fairly portable.

(Cogito less so, since it currently requires bash, and does not get
extensive testing on non-GNU platforms.)
