Is it revolutionary? Sounds like going back to SunOS days where the C
compiler was bundled. New users still ask "where's the compiler?".
Currently the only answer is /usr/sfw/bin/gcc or download and install
Sun Studio, which in my opinion, gives the wrong impression.
Add a 'cc' program to /usr/bin is definately traditional, and probably
relatively benign. The other 99 tools and utilities included in Sun Studio
create more of an issue. The current Sun Studio offering is so different
from the old /usr/bin/cc that I don't think we can ever go back to
the way things were. Modern developers expect much more than just
a C compiler these days.
Now that the Studio tools are free, is there any compelling reason why
they can't be bundled? Then we could get rid of the ever confusing
/usr/ucb/cc and save Usenet bandwidth.
I have only a loose understanding of this "bundling" process.
Do you mean bundling into Solaris? Or bundling into JES?
Remember, the vast majority of Solaris installations are never used
for development at all, and the admins of those systems would
probably be happiest if they knew there was no compiler of any kind
installed on the system.
(I'm not arguing for anything specific here, just pointing out
that it's a complicated issue)
