Hi Tom,

"OpenSolaris Express" never existed. Solaris Express (SXCE) or "nevada"
was the older distribution of OpenSolaris software that was descended from
Solaris 10 and came on DVDs. Solaris Express was discontinued last year.
(The development branch of OS/Net is still called "nevada", but the
"nevada" distribution no longer exists).

The current OpenSolaris distribution ("indiana") uses different packaging
and installation systems. Since packages can be installed from a network
repository now, the developer tools are not on the CD to save space.
You can read the documentation at
http://wikis.sun.com/display/OpenSolarisInfo/Home to learn how to use this
distribution. Sun Studio compilers are installable with the 'ss-dev'
metapackage that includes other tools. If you require GCC, install
'gcc-dev' (but keep in mind the native compiler suite is Sun Studio).

I assume you used AI (bootable in current builds) because you have SPARC
hardware. You can also try the text installer:
