oops, sorry, thinking about it, i think the only part that's meaningful is the lhs, i think the incoming/update side is actually just a pretty name to describe the hook you've provided. an update itself would have been safe, but you're doing a commit (after a merge) in theory you should be able to use post-changegroup. which should happen after the lock is released.
