these are the prices for software we might use from a non-profit
software supplier:

$160 Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition English/Multilanguage 
(32-Bit/x64)
$6   Windows Terminal Services User CAL
$240 SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition, x64 (Includes 1 Processor License)

the base software cost would be $400.  if 200 users chose to use the
server (which is a higher figure than i was imagining), the license
cost would be $1,200.  obviously, some money needs to be spent, but
the amount doesn't seem prohibitive.
