John's health has steadily deteriorated throughout the year, but in the last few weeks he was home with us where he peacefully passed away yesterday November 9. Ham Radio, and especially Low Band DX-ing, were my father's lifelong passion and always had a strong presence in our house. Sometimes literally, when many of you paid us a visit or a group of DX'ers came over for a weekend of contesting. At other times in the background, when my dad was working on a project or experimenting with new equipment or antennas. Though I don't have a call-sign, I very much feel part of the big radio family and always will. I am very proud of everything my father has accomplished together with you, and I am grateful to the many of you who have given him so much joy over the years. We will miss him dearly, but we take comfort looking back on the beautiful life he lived as a member of the wonderful Ham Radio community. We are planning a digital farewell ceremony on Saturday Nov 21st and will keep you updated on practicalities. If you would like to send us a message please mail to [email protected] - John's old e-mail account is not in use anymore. In the meantime, you can pay him a visit at QRZ.com where he always kept his resume up to date. His latest *Low Band Dxing* book is the most important amateur radio publication in my library. He left us with a lot to be grateful for, and which will also greatly benefit those starting out on 160m and higher. Don't forget! John also used to be active on the Topband reflector, and we can also benefit from reading his posts by searching the Topband Archives for ON4UN. I am still grateful to be one among the many that he personally helped there. 73, Mike - W0BTU https://web.archive.org/web/20190827040547/http://w0btu.com On Tue, Nov 10, 2020, 1:26 PM ON4WW_pandora <[email protected]> wrote: > My great friend and ham radio mentor John ON4UN has passed away. > ... ------------------------------ Message: 5 Date: Tue, 10 Nov 2020 17:55:10 -0400 From: "Mike Smith VE9AA" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Topband: John ON4UN silent key Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Sad. Another one gone. I have a couple of his books and found them quite useful. Like most of you, have worked John countless times on the low bands, and more recently either casually on 20m from my MINI (mobile) just tuning across him calling CQ randomly, or in a CWOps Wed CWT "1 hour test". He always took the time to dig my weak mobile signal out and say "Hi Mike". I'll miss that. RIP John . When measured at the bottom of the antenna, the resonance is at 1790 kHz, and impedance is 44 ohms. Next we are going to shorten the top hat wires so that the resonance comes to 1830 or so, I will update. 73/DX Steve HA0DU -- Ezt az e-mailt az Avast v?ruskeres? szoftver ?tvizsg?lta. https://www.avast.com/antivirus ------------------------------ Message: 10 Date: Tue, 10 Nov 2020 23:10:52 +0000 (UTC) From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Subject: Re: Topband: ON4UN - SK Nov 9, 2020 Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 A terrible loss of a fountain of knowledge.? As a person who also loves the Low band and Contests like him, I would like to write a memory of him. I participated in the DX Pediction in 1985 as a Low band CW operator of Kingman Reef K9AJ/KH5K and Palmyra Island W0RLX/KH5. In very difficult conditions, I worked a few European on 80 meters. He is the only European to QSO from both locations, KH5K and KH5. He was really pleased that I gave him two new countries. He had been waiting for 160M permissions in Belgium for many years. And we, as well as the 160M man, had been waiting for it for a long time. It was finally approved in January 1987, and he came out with a strong signal. He made us happy. I still clearly remember that time. Also he wrote ON4UN's Low Band DXing which is used by many people as a bible. I'm just one of them. I visited Mr.160M Stew W1BB in 1981. And I am proud that he used my photo of Stew in the book. Thank you everything, John. Never on the lower bands 40,80 or 160 apparently. Was always nice to hear him coming over the pole and he certainly was a regular out of Belgium. I have two editions of his Low Band DXing books and have used it extensively. He was always friendly and I never heard him say a bad word against anyone. Just a nice, friendly ham with a lot of knowledge he enjoyed sharing. Will be missed. But if there is a ham radio up there he will be a welcome member.
