I fully agree with Jeff and JC regarding the DHDL. I built my first DHDL
shortly after George's TX3A operation, and it worked extremely well.The
next step was a broadside phased array of two DHDLs, as described in an
excellent article by IV3PRK. I don't know if the article, "RX
Antennas at IV3PRK: The TX3A DHDL – Doubling the Double Half-Delta Loop
Receiving Antenna", is still easy to find, but I have a PDF copy if
anyone is interested, Luis described in details Front-End and Broadside
systems. My second QTH is located in an orchard with very good soil,
where Beverage antennas don't perform particularly well. My
"theory" is that, since the DHDL is not connected to ground,
it picks up less local noise conducted through the soil. I'm using a
Norton preamp with about 13 dB of gain, and that's sufficient. This
broadside DHDL array has helped me work many new Pacific DX stations
that were completely inaudible on the Beverage. Even last Bouvet was
successfully worked, mostly thanks to the DHDLs on CW.
