A couple of questions embedded here. On the earlier issue with Software Updates, the latest version of Eclipse doesn't have a submenu. Choose Software Updates to get a screen that allows searching for installed updates or available software.
On the error message, I assume you are re-installing Composer? I'm not familiar with the error message, but I wonder if the underlying problem is memory limitations.
