I'm in pretty much the same boat as you right now.  Just learning about it.  
Sounded like it might be along the lines of what you were looking for.

For your case, do you at least know the possible properties that might be used, 
but just don't know which of those will be used in any specific case?  Or do 
you mean you don't even know which possible properties might be used?

If the former, you can make a transitive superproperty of all the possible 
intermediate properties and then query something like:

?x MyOnt:transSuper+/foaf:name ?name

And I think that would find ANY path that uses your possible properties that 
ends in foaf:name. 

If you don't know possible props, maybe something like:

?x ?prop+/foaf:name ?name

Might work.

Again, these are just ideas, not sure if they'll work or not as I haven't had a 
chance to work with property paths.  Also, unless you are talking about 
starting from a specific instance of ?x, these may take a LONG time to execute.

Oh, and if you want a list of the traversed properties to there's a way to get 
that I think too, but would have to think about it a bit.

meaning "find ANY path that ends in foaf:name "
