Yes, while SPARQL 1.1 adds some nice new string manipulation functions, the
standard still does not include a function to do this. TopBraid supports the
afn:localname() extension function, which will pull "ResearchGroup0" out of
<http://www.Department0.University0.edu/ResearchGroup0>. (The
afn:namespace() extension function, which will pull "
"http://www.Department0.University0.edu/"; out of the same URI, is also
handy.)

Subject: [topbraid-users] Calculating and extracting a substring in SPARQL

I asked the following question on answers.semanticweb.com and was
informed there is no answer using just SPARQL 1.1
http://answers.semanticweb.com/questions/10457/calculating-and-extracting-a-
substring-in-sparql

Is there an extension function in TBC? Or SPIN?

Thanks,
Tim
