Could you show us more details of the error message, or, ideally, the XSD
file itself?

Thanks,

Ok, I have created and XSD file from the Powerdesigner data model (PDM) and
validated it using a XML validator tool. Now I am getting the following
error while importing it into TOPBRAID Composer

"Failed to parse XSD Document

Failed to parse XSD Document with the URL file:/C/...."

Appreciate if someone can give what be wrong here?

Thanks

Many of our users directly connect to a database to automatically get its
schema converted to OWL - tables become classes, columns become datatype
properties and foreign keys become object properties. One of the import menu
options is about connecting to relational databases. This would have the
same outcome as converting the physical model. We are not familiar with the
Powerdesigner pfm file format and don't have a special converter for it.

What is additional useful information beyond the schema itself is available
in your data dictionary? For example, it probably has descriptions of data
elements. This is certainly good to have. If you can export it as a
spreadsheet it would be easy to import it. You can simply place .xsl file
into TBC workspace and double click to open. Each row will become RDF
resource. Columns will become properties. I expect you will need to do some
post-processing with SPARQL.

I am looking for best approach to create our initial ontology from the
information we have.

1. We have a physical data model in Powerdesigner pfm format.

This model shows all tables, data elements and relationships among different
tables.

2. We have a data dictionary with the list of data elements and their
metadata (about 20 columns) of information.

Which of these artifacts is best for start creating our initial ontology and
any ideas of steps should be taken for the path selected.

I would appreciate if someone can give us some detail pros and cons and
steps.

Thanks in advance

I would like to chime in to thank you for this blog posting. It is so
clearly written and therefore very useful (for settling some debates) and I
will pass it on to my colleagues.

Thanks again!

Thanks a lot!!!

The information in the blog is extremely useful.

Some of the links at the end to related blogs do not work though and need to
be updated.

This question comes up fairly often, so I've decided to respond in a blog:

Subject: Re: [topbraid-users] Ontology and Import from Powerdesigner

I am new to this so please bear with me.

I have some basic questions:

1. How an ontology as compared to logical data model? We do have a logical
data model now why we need an ontology?

2. I need to import a PowerDesigner (pdm file) Data model into topbraid. Any
tips on how to do this?

Appreciate any response on these

Thanks
