...that was a critical typo. my post should have read "...did NOT work in an INSERT clause" while in the SPARQL view window. the problem problem was repeatable. replacing ?this with the loaded resource's qname the INSERT worked as expected (while ?this was fine in the WHERE clause). I'll produce a test case.
