The mac autoextracted the file into a folder in my downloads folder - I moved that folder into my documents folder. I should have permissions for all of those places, at least I hope so. I am an administrator. It does seem like mountain lion has different permissions than previous versions of the Mac OS. Thanks for giving me something to think about, but any other advice would be very appreciated.
