#8494: Does MaxAdvertisedBandwidth do anything useful and if not, can we deprecate it? -------------------------------------------------+------------------------- Reporter: alphawolf | Owner: (none) Type: defect | Status: new Priority: Low | Milestone: Tor: | unspecified Component: Core Tor/Tor | Version: Tor: | 0.2.4.11-alpha Severity: Normal | Resolution: Keywords: consensus, bandwidth, | Actual Points: MaxAdvertisedBandwidth tor-relay tor-dirauth | needs-insight | Parent ID: | Points: Reviewer: | Sponsor: -------------------------------------------------+-------------------------
Comment (by teor): Relays use MaxAdvertisedBandwidth to limit bandwidthrate and bandwidthburst in their descriptors. But authorities do not limit consensus weight by bandwidthrate. And they shouldn't, because the consensus weight is not directly comparable with the bandwidth rate. Instead, bandwidth scanners should calculate weights based on bandwidthrate. Torflow sort-of does this using partitions (see above). -- Ticket URL: <https://trac.torproject.org/projects/tor/ticket/8494#comment:6> Tor Bug Tracker & Wiki <https://trac.torproject.org/> The Tor Project: anonymity online
