At the point where you're installing polipo, you're definitely doing it
wrong. TBB should just work. There are issues with startup delay that need
fixing (#3782), but if the browser you get at startup doesn't display
check.torproject.org, it is either because your exit is bad or check is
down. There was some recent check maintenance recently. Perhaps you were
just unlucky.
Re-open if websites other than check are still broken in the browser that
attempts to access it.
