One reason why we did not drop DNSPort in Tails, which using ttdnsd for requests types DNSPort is not able to answer: using *only* ttdnsd makes you rely on a very small number of upstream DNS servers; if you do so, whatever hostname they decide does not exist any more, does not exist anymore for you.
