I too (if I understand you correctly) have been unable to make Tor my default browser, even when manually changing the GNOME settings. I'm on Xubuntu.
additionally to starting Tor with ...start-tor-browser -allow-remote you must set Firefox as your preferred browser, and no other Firefox except the Tor Browser must run. -- Viele Grüße, Hartmut
