1) The .desktop file is in my /home/jack/Desktop folder but does not show up on my visible desktop. 2) I also have ticked/checked 'show trash can' and 'show connected volumes' and 'show Documents folder' from Desktop Preferences -> Desktop Icons, but none of those appear visible on my desktop either.

In my KVM machine it sees my wireless as a wired connection.
