I had the same problem specifically with defaultMaxActive. What has been discovered pertains to changes made in dbcp 1.1 (pre-RC2):
-defaultMaxActive has been renamed to maxActive -the base class InstanceKeyDataSource of SharedPoolDataSource was not public preventing the beanutils library from setting the property. So change your property files and download the latest dbcp 1.1. Hope this helps.
