+1 for this too / including docs. I think the original aspiration was to be able to produce code that was totally DB independent. Rather try to do this in code, it probably should just be handled in the xsd files.
The strict version probably should limit column name lengths to Something like 255 chars with the non-strict version having no limit. This would let users decide if they care about DB independence or not by the XSD file used in the schema XML. The code should then not care about length.
