schema: table element: alias attribute

Hello,
This is potentially a daft question, so feel free to shoot me down in 
flames ;-)

I noticed the alias attribute for the table element. I applied it to one 
of my tables but for the life of me I can't figure out what it does. Can 
anyone explain?
