Let me be more explicit; this change will have no effect on overlay or
menu performance, but it should make all of the dialogs and tools
launch faster.

I spoke too soon on this count.  Mercurial is correctly reporting it's
version number now, but our installer scripts were not using it
correctly, so this daily build still says 'unknown'.  I've pushed a
couple of fixes to the patch queue so the next build will work
correctly.
