I have the same issue when trying to check in a large .sql file which is
text, not binary. The diff is very fast when writing to a file using the
command

#!DOS
hg diff large.sql > large.sql.diff
}}}
The sql file is about 2 MB and the resulting diff is about 3 MB.
I agree that it seems to be a UI bug.
