I really fail to see what's so funny here.

As a general note, sticking with the status quo is sure
a somewhat "save" option. But once you have used some
odd UI for a long time, you begin to view it as the
norm. And the current UI is really odd.

So I would try to see it with a bit more relaxed
viewpoint, instead of trying to view everything
with your old glasses.

One point I can say is that these checkmarked options
are rarely changed by users. Having these taking up that much
space in such a prominent place like near the status bar
is something that has annoyed me for quite some time.
Which isn't an argument against your rejection, for sure.

But why are these checkmarks on the bottom? They affect
something above them, no? And they affect only the left
side, but they look like they would affect everything
above.

As an argument, I could say we could add more information
into that new page of the notebook you say you don't want
(because it doesn't fit into the existing pages there).

For example, we could list the number of files for each
category (currently, you don't know if there are "unknown"
files if you have disabled the "?").

Another argument is, I've made it the first tab. I think
it's not that odd to have some settings/options in the first
tab and then some info in later ones.

The only options left I currently see is the menu (which I
already said why it is bad), the status quo -- which
is horrible in my book. Or yet another dialog.

But that, honestly, seems a bit ridiculous to me, given
the possibilities we have with using the notebook
on the right.
