 From my point of view:

MQ is a very powerful and nice tool. It is so powerful that it has a lot 
of rough edges and lets you mess things up - especially when it comes to 
conflict handling. TortoiseHg puts a nice GUI on top of MQ. That is very 
convenient and useful for many tasks, but it can't (and shouldn't) hide 
that it is MQ.

I think the best advice is to fokus on learning how to use MQ from the 
command line, and then start using the GUI where it makes sense and when 
you understand what it does.

That doesn't answer your questions, but it might help you find answers 
or workarounds.

(pbranches should (in theory) allow a more polished user experience, but 
isn't as widely used and polished yet ...)
