For completeness, here's what led to the problem and the fix. Install TortoiseSVN and change icon sets to something other than XPStyles. Install TortoiseHG. Everything works fine for both with the new icon set. Uninstall TortoiseSVN. Icons now missing even though the icons exist in the TortoiseHG installation directory and the Registry (this was the puzzling part). The fix. Re-install TortoiseSVN, all icons back. Switch icon sets to XPStyle. Icons still present. Uninstall TortoiseSVN. Icons gone. TortoiseHG Registry does not show the entries. Do a Repair install of TortoiseHG. Icons back. Of course, this took reboots at every step, but other than that everything now works. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Beautiful is writing same markup.
