Yes, these show my problem very well. I find if I select lines, the background is turned to a very light gray, which makes the lines visible. But that is more hassle than running mercurial from the command line. I am running KDE, and I will see if I can keep multiple desktops on one activity, and still have multiple activities. I believe I can set different backgrounds for the different activities, so this may give me a workaround.
