Just for the record, subversion does nothing so drastic with an ordinary
delete.  Subversion does give you the option of working on the local
copy and then committing, or working directly on the repository.  But in
either case, deletions only affect new revisions.

As I said, I think there may be a way to modify the history more
radically, at least as the repository admin, but I've never gotten into
that.  It may be that the revision process is roughly as you describe
for Hg, involving basically regenerating the repository.
