I had this happen, sounds like the input for the path to the external editor 
had changed and is no longer absolute. To fix this the path to your external 
editor can either be changed to absolute by putting it in quotes "C:\My 
External Editor\editor.exe" or the path can be changed to not have spaces 
C:\My_External_Editor\editor.exe
