Hi again,

Of course, just after I wrote this post I managed to get it working after 
all. Here's what I did:

- uninstall
- restart
- open regedit, search for "tortoise"
- delete any registry entry that comes up
- search and delete until there are no more results
- install tortoise svn

now the context menu is back, though there are still no icons showing the 
working copy status of my files.
