Another tip for externals, I suppose, is that in all my projects I have a
separate folder named "Externals", and keep all and keep only external
links in that folder.

Each External link makes a single subfolder in the folder named "Externals"
where it puts the linked items, and all the svn externals properties are
tied to being properties of that folder, not somewhere else.

 File structures for the projects and codebase have to bend over to submit
to that rule, but hey, it's consistent and avoids recursive externals.

(Learned this one from my coworkers, and since everyone is on board with
that system it works ok.)
