Earlier today I sent the below email to POSSE California applicants. Mel and I both felt we got too late of a start ourselves on generating publicity. By the time people were getting the word about this POSSE, many were already done with their summer planning.
In the end, we didn't get nearly 50% of the sufficient applications to have this POSSE, so we had to cancel. ----- Forwarded message from Karsten Wade <[email protected]> ----- Date: Tue, 15 Jun 2010 08:35:56 -0700 From: Karsten Wade <[email protected]> To: Karsten Wade <[email protected]>, Mel Chua <[email protected]>, Alolita Sharma <[email protected]> Subject: POSSE California 2010 cancelled Thank you for your interest in attending POSSE in Northern California this summer 2010. Unfortunately, we have made the hard decision to cancel this event. We were not able to get enough attendees to hold the event. Over this past year we have learned that academic calendars and planning move on a different timescale than we were operating on, and our planning and invitations arrived too late for many people to have a chance to attend. Thus we are planning POSSE in Northern California for 2011. We haven't picked a specific date yet, sometime in June after classes are done? Your input is very welcome. We really appreciate your interest. We'll get word to you about POSSE in 2011 as soon as possible. You may also want to join our Teaching Open Source community mailing list to keep track of all of these discussions, events, and practices: http://teachingopensource.org/index.php/TeachingOpenSource_Mailing_List A few of our instructors will be contacting each of you individually, by region, to see if we can be of any immediate help with you around teaching open source and POSSE-related activities. For example, if you can make some time this summer to sit down one-to-one for a day, we can take you through some of the same learning and information that you get in a full-blown POSSE.
