Hi TOSers! Asheesh Laroia and I are planning a FOSS Hackathon at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, scheduled for Sept 25-26. It's our hope such events will become a staple of computer science clubs around the country. Saturday is a limited-space workshop for those new to FOSS. Sunday is an open hackathon where people can get hooked up with some projects welcoming of undergraduates. Our tentative plans are here: http://asheesh.org/scratch/Penn_open_source_hackathon
So we have a few questions of interest to TOS. 1) How do our plans look? Would you change the module topics? If so, how? 2) What would be some good resources to distribute to students new to FOSS? We already have secured sponsorship from GitHub, BitBucket, O'Reilly, and Pragmatic Bookshelf. So we're covered in the hosting and books area. Are there any other sponsorships we should be seeking? The goal of sponsorships isn't to get money to spend on steak dinners for the event itself :-\. It's to get tools to give participants to propel their FOSS involvement after the event. 3) Module leaders! I'm doing one and Asheesh is doing another. But that leaves two. We can find grad students at Penn if necessary, but we'd really like to have module leaders with lots of experience in FOSS. (I'm a newcomer to FOSS myself, so maybe even three more module leaders if we can find them). We'd like to invite Mel Chua from Red Hat and anyone else who can give a good module presentation. 4) Project leaders. We are selecting projects for the Sunday hackathon portion. However, nothing would be better than to have developers from the project on hand. One of the (many) reasons undergrads "don't know how to get started" in FOSS is they don't know how to choose a project and don't know if they're welcome. Nothing's as welcoming as having a developer on hand! So if you have a project, we'd like to invite you to come to the Sunday portion. Thanks for reading, and happy FOSS'ing! Best, Yuvi -- Yuvi Masory University of Pennsylvania
