If you read the review, You'll find a more precise statement of the
relationship of this book and Microsoft, "the fact that the authors
took money for research from Microsoft ... although they assure
readers that the funds came with no strings attached"  It is
legitimate to know this and factor it into an evaluation of the
information provided.
