One important thing in open source culture that we seem to be
forgetting here is that "the person who does the work, decides how
that work gets done."
Ian asked for a VM, and is clearly willing to step up and do the work
to make infrastructure happen. However, what he's gotten is, "Well,
all of us don't think that's the way to go." Which is fine to say -
but I think those recommendations have been heard, and meanwhile,
stuff we want done yesterday isn't getting done until three months
from tomorrow.
Does it hurt to give a volunteer a VM to work on stuff with? For
comparison, did you know that the reason we have a POSSE application
tool is because we gave Ian a VM instance with root so he could make
it happen? Quite simply, I don't see that providing tools right now to
get stuff done by those willing to do the work in anyway prevents us
from using some, none, or all of OSUOSLs service in the near or far
future. If someone wants to step up to do that work, they're very
welcome to; Ian has stepped up with an offer to do things given a VM.
Since Ian has stepped up to do this work, I'd rather find a way to
give him what he says he needs to do it. Jeff, is there anything else
we need to do?
