Try installing the OpenID extension,
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID
<http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:OpenID%20>

and redirect new users to use it, such as
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&returnto=Special:OpenIDLogin

It seems to keep spammers at bay. (Perhaps the barriers are kept superior.)

Existing users are not required to change their accounts.

New contributors are likely to already have an OpenID provider,
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/index.php?title=Special:OpenIDLogin&returnto=Special:UserLogin
