SIGCSE 2025 Affiliated Event: Humanitarian Open Source in Education

Curious about Humanitarian Free and Open Source Software (HFOSS)? Want to
involve your students in projects for social good? Not sure how to get started?
Join us at this SIGCSE 2025 Affiliated Event in Pittsburgh, PA on Wednesday,
February 26, 2025.

Overview: Getting involved in an HFOSS project is one of the biggest hurdles
for faculty who want to use HFOSS in their teaching. The goal of this workshop
is to provide a forum for faculty working on HFOSS education to compare
experiences. The meeting will also provide an opportunity to explore ways to
lower hurdles by using controlled HFOSS project environments for student
learning activities.

This full-day event will consist of morning and afternoon sessions that can be
registered for separately. The focus for each session will be as follows:

HFOSS Education Update (Morning) – The morning session will provide an update
and discussion of faculty efforts in HFOSS education. The focus will be on
education oriented HFOSS projects, open source projects that have a
humanitarian purpose and are also designed to support HFOSS education. These
projects are started by and managed by one or more academic institutions.
Examples include Libre Food Pantry, Open Energy Dashboard, FarmData, and
Submitty. Presentation and discussion will cover the status of these projects
and issues and opportunities for starting or joining an education-oriented
HFOSS project.

HFOSS Learning Materials (Afternoon) – The afternoon session will explore
learning materials on teachingopensource.org, HFOSS education kits, and an
effort to create Runestone hosted materials for HFOSS education. There will
also be discussion time for attendees to identify learning materials that are
not currently available that would be helpful in teaching about HFOSS.
