I haven't heard the radio-friendly version, but the
unexpurgated version is "was kicked to death"--no
"his," so there should be no sense of a missing word.
As for the meaning of "passed this way," I assume from
Chas' explanation about someone falling between the
cracks of society (on the TM site) that it just means
"came through here" or "was here," not just an
expression for dying (passing away). My guess anyway.
