I will go on to tell you about the selector gig last night, but first I
want to ask about the man who occupies the reverse of the OSB
lp. Following last night's gig, I wanted to find out more about The
Selector, and so I put it in my search engine, and came across the
2-tone webring. Looking at an article on that it mentioned Prince
Nutty of Madness. Now I meant to bring this up earlier, but as there
are now two sources suggesting his presence I thought I'd ask
what role he played in the big picture that is Madness?

Right-o, onto a review of the events that took place at The
Duchess, Leeds on the evening of the 7th October 1999. I made
my way down to the Duchess in order to see the Selector by
myself, as none of my friends would come citing that they'd never
heard of them before, and had no money anyway. Got there, and
tickets were 7 on the door. Gladly paid my money and entered
the joint. Once inside I had a good look around and saw the usual
mix of misfits that always seem to gather there, from the old man
with his dog to the Oasis fan, and everyone inbetween including a
rather annoying Greek or Spanish element, with a higher
percantage than normal of people wearing 2-tone garb. They were
mainly in the shadows at the back of the club, obviously waiting to
see the Selector, and this proved to be what had dragged most
people from their homes that evening. the support band came on,
Shade Monkey I think they were called, and I must say I didn't
think too much of them. They seemed to be a mix of Funked up
(that is spelt correctly) ska-jazz with some rap and hip-hop thrown
in for good measure, which really isn't my pint of beer, but they did
have some good sounds. After their set of about 40 minutes, they
went off to be replaced by an empty stage. The Selector came on
late to a very expectant crowd, which had pulled itself from the
fringes of the bar to the stage front area. Had they lost it after all
these years? Were my first impressions of a band that I knew
nothing about going to be as dissappointing as losing a pet dog?
Certainly not! They were fantastic. It would have been impossible
for a deaf man to not have tapped his foot, for the beats they were
pounding out were awesome. They came right out of the blocks
with Train to Skaville, and along the way played Just a whisper and
Complement the bullet (I think these were the titles, I'm not sure
though, it is all a bit hazy) As I was on my own I thought I may
have been a bit reluctant to get in with the dancing, but by the third
song I was in there and away and lost in the music. A whole host
of sangs that I never knew existed passed by and at the end of
their hour and a quarter set I came away feeling that it was the
best night I had had in a long time. On my way out of the club I
picked up a flyer with a list of future dates of bands playing at The
Duchess, and a band of note is Bim Skala Bim on October 13th.
I've heard they're good too, so if you can get down there, then do.
Overall, the whole night was 9.5 out of ten. Excellent.
