Good Morning one and all in Maddieland,

I am writing to you on this Friday morn, which should be my last
"Wonderful"-less morning at work;-) The day is almost upon us. Obviously I
had to go to the official site and listen to those songs I hadn't heard yet
(No Money still doesn't work!), and it sounds brilliant. But what I was
most surprised by was the complete and utter skanking-ness of "The
Communicator", and how much I love it!!! Some of you may have gathered over
the years that I have always believed Madness got better with age to reach
their peak with "Keep Moving", and in general I always prefer their more
mature musical pieces. BUT, "The Communicator" just sounds amazing!!! The
best piece of skanking I've heard since, well, the heady days of Two Tone!
This could get my old tired limbs back on the dance floor for my
rubber-legged poor-man's-Chas Smash dance!;-) It feels fresh but old at the
same time. There are bits reminiscent of "Guns Of Navarone" and that
"Sugar... Honey Honey" song from the 60s. But it's brilliant. Can't wait to
see them do this in Newcastle.

And while I'm on the subject of the skanking stuff, Tracy and Jenny
discussed "Drip Fed Fred" the other day. Now, like Tracy, I thought "Drip
Fed Fred" was going to be an acquired taste and for Mad fans only because
of the comedy ska element to it. And when I took the 5 Cuts promo back to
deepest Lanarkshire the other weekend, I was sure that was the one song
which my mates would tell me to switch off as soon as they heard it. How
*wrong* was I???? My two mates who are the only ones to show any
appreciation for Madness over the years thought "Drip Fed Fred" was easily
the best track of the five! And the reason? It's just so MADNESS!!! So
perhaps, for chart success, "Drip Fed Fred" and "The Communicator" are the
way to go, because it has become obvious that the trendy, "credible" music
press are going to ignore them no matter what the songs sound like.

Cheers for now,
Peter
