At Wh Smith, the sounds buyers work out the WH Smith chart at least a month
before a single is due to be released, as it's based on "predicted" sales.
If a single has a date change of release up to three weeks before release,
the buyer then has to find a replacement song at short notice to fill the
original gap, and then get all the printing re-arranged for the advertising
etc.
They then have to decide whether or not to change the chart at the new
release date, to allow for the new single, and weigh up whether or not it is
going to be more of a guaranteed success, it would appear this was not the
case this time!
