And now to add to Vince Foley's review of "We want
Freddie":

1. Not since the demos of Michael Caine and Uncle Sam
has there been a version so worthwhile to listen to
and yet so far away from the final version.

2. Lee's vocals start off as if you've put the song on
at the wrong speed. You try to correct the speed only
to realise you're playing it on cd!!!

3. The vocals early on in the song sound very like Lee
on his Crunch! material especially the unreleased gem
"Round Trip" with more of those Wild West vocal
performances. You can almost see him sitting in a
saloon lighting a cigar before some gunfight
showdown!!
You can easily see why Lee thought the song would be
ideal for Ian Dury. I've always thought his vocal
efforts for Crunch! resembled the King of the
blockheads. You can so imagine Dury singing the
Crunch! number "Pop My Top". Good golly Miss Molly,
you sure look tasty...

4. This seems to be the version that Suggs bases his
own vocal version on when he doesn't have Ian Dury
around.

5. Nothing could beat the album version. The demo
really lacks the variety of vocals that the album
version brings.

6. Mike's solo is absolutely class here. It has a
lovely echo and would almost haunt you. Would sound
great as part of a theme tune for "Tales Of The
Unexpected".

7. Whereas the conspiracy mix ends with the chorus,
this ends with the choir boy - like singing. All in
all this is not a very commercial version. Has too
many unnecessary additions but you'll split your sides
when you hear Lee singing "Cock - a - doodle - doo"!!

8. There are one or two funny things added into the
lyrics on the cd cover, which you can all find for
yourself, but Lee sings a few lyrics differently:

 - There are scumbags here amongst us.
 - Only break your knees. (BBC would have loved that)
 - To the king you must concede.
 - Peace shall not prevail in Purley.

Oh what fun you'll have.....
