My hubby works at the Punchline comedy club and there are several
comedians who record all their shows and tell the audience they can buy a
copy of they show they just saw as they leave. The comedians take their
money (usually $5-10) and address, and give them a receipt. Within a few
days they receive a CD in the mail of the show they saw with a list of
other days and dates and the opportunity to buy those. With an average
of 200 people at each show, at least 20 will buy the disk, so it's a few
extra bucks in the comedian's pocket (at 7 shows a week that adds up
FAST!), an inexpensive souvenier for the customer, and everyone is happy
(except the record label who is edged out entirely, hehe). I think it's
a great idea, and I'll be suprised if more musicians don't do it.

As for the MD recorders - ha! I met an industrious young woman at a
Charlatains show who was using a digital cell phone to record the show
straight to her computer. I was impressed.

Cheers!
- E.
