Hey Now!

Like everyone else this side of Christendom, I have
just viewed the long awaited young Guns, and must say
the show, although quite enjoyable, did have a number
of defects along the way.

The segments around Camden were very enjoyable and for
many, so damn familiar. Good interview segments by
Mike and Woody, whereas others (CJ Smyth and CJ
Foreman) were vastly under used. I may be slaughtered
for this now, but feel I must say it: Suggs has to
seriously come up with new anecdotes in his
recollections of the Madness years.

How many more times can one hear about how he walked
down the Caledonian road when the band broke up? How
many more times do we have to hear about the stories
associated with the skinheads movement etc.? Curt
perhaps but come on please!

Essentially I have yet to see a new, original and
different Madness interview or documentary. For what
its worth the 1999 Planet Rock Profiles would be up
there on that.great view if you ever get the chance.

I did like the show, dont get me wrongthe interviews
were enjoyable, seeing Dave Robinson again was quite
good. The Dutch footage was also good, yet the pace
and timing was a bit off.too much spent on the early
years and Mikes subsequent departure yet little to
none about 84-86, the Madness, the wilderness years
and the Divine comebackokay Madstock (and funny old
meI thought I was at Madstock in 1996 aswell..where
did that come from as the narrator pointed out it only
happened in 92,94 and 98). :O) Another area that was
brushed over was the 1999 comeback and all that
followed Wonderful, 60 seconds does not suffice.

Yes the vintage footage of the Invaders was sheer
class, yes the vintage footage of the band on tour
c.1983 was class, yes the sites, sounds and smells of
Camden were all very good. Something interesting was
said with the cop out comment from Woody on The
Madness and Thompsons subsequent reply, I thought
something was coming to light here.

Yet overall I was still left yearning for more. I had
been told so much about this show, what would be on
and what not, who would say what and who not, yet with
no presence of key figures like Hasler, Langer and
others one cant help feel that something more could
have been done.

Well done to all involved, thanks to the BBC for
making the show. I must personally say well done to
Chris Carter-Pegg for getting a mention. He is simply
a gentleman and a scholar and was indeed very helpful
in the making of it. By the way, I thought I had a big
Madness collection, this guy is the Rupert Murdoch of
the Madness world, an unreal batch of goodies!

Okay maybe I am being a bit harsh here folks, however
I still feel that the full and true Madness story has
yet (and must) be told.

All the best

VincE!
