Hiya Vince and all you Maddies out there,
Don't panic too much Vince about only having 50% of these, because this
list isn't correct. They are certainly not all onstage appearances. And
here's where I lay my claims to this week's wearer of the Golden Anorak
which has been hangning on the peg for far too long;-) Ones listed which
I'm sure are wrong are:
>20/05/82 House Of Fun
>27/05/82 House Of Fun
>03/06/82 House Of Fun
Madness NEVER appeared in the studio for this because they were in Japan at
the time. The video was always shown and one week they had a recorded
message from Japan from the band.
>22/07/82 Driving In My Car
When this entered the charts at No.6 the video was shown. This was usually
the case for Madness as I remember seeing a BBC documentary about TOTP and
the director said he always tried to show the Madness video when they first
entered the chart because they were so entertaining. The single then spent
3 weeks at no.4, and for the second of these weeks they were indeed in the
studio.
>18/08/83 Wings Of A Dove
>01/09/83 Wings Of A Dove
Again, only the video was shown for this when they were at no.19 and 2
weeks later when they were at no.4. The band were in America throughout the
time this was out.
>03/11/83 The Sun And The Rain
The first week this entered the chart at no.21 the video was shown. They
were in the studio 2 weeks later when at No.5 but went down the charts the
next week. I'm sure it was because Jimmy Saville predicted it would get to
No.1!;-)
>09/02/84 Michael Caine
Again, the video was shown when a new entry at no.26. Should have been on
again 2 weeks later when at no.11 but TOTP was cut short to 20 minutes that
night and they played The Cure's "The Caterpillar" instead! MUCH to my
annoyment (despite liking The Cure). But I suppose The Young Ones remedied
this BBC faux pas;-) Anyway, the greatest single of all time then fell down
the charts and so never made the Top 10, although it made the top 10 in
every other independent chart at the time! If only Gallup had computers
like they have today.
>28/12/89 House Of Fun
This isn't one I know to be wrong but REALLY???? House Of Fun in 1989???
What was that about. Can anyone remember this? And also remember why???
>27/02/92 It Must Be Love
I was sure they only showed the video for this re-issue. The band hadn't
actually got back together at this point. Anyone remember seeing them in
the studio for this?
You realise it's because my brain is crammed full of stuff like this that I
find it impossible to take in any new information. A bit like Homer, I'm
scared any new stuff will just knock out some old interesting stuff;-)
Cheers for now,
Peter
