HIya Steve and everyone in Maddieland,

Ha ha! You don't know what you've let yourself in for Steve;-) This is my
favourite subject, being an anorak and all. There were 7 tracks on teh
original Divine Madness which were in their album form. Here they are with
differences pointed out:

The Prince - The single was of course a completely different recording on
Two Tone. The album version has that instrumental bit added on to the end,
so is a good bit longer.

One Step Beyond - The single was edited big time from the album version to
add about another 30-40 seconds, and most of Chas' intro was cut, leaving
out the "So if you've come in..."

The Return Of The Los Palmas 7 - Again the album version was edited to add
length and the actually inserted a whole new extra piece of instrumentation
in the middle bit (the best bit. You know what I mean). And the version on
Complete Madness was useless as this edited out the crowd noises at the
start. Complete Madness was a total hatchet job cutting off the starts and
ends of the tunes to make them "blend"!!!

Shut Up - The single did not have the brilliant piano solo on the fade-out.
They just added more of the chorus to fade. Again, the single version of
this is a victim of the Complete Madness snip, finishing a whole 36 seconds
early. The full single version was ONLY found on the 1983 US CD, "Madness",
but now also on "Total Madness". For the remastered Divine, Virgin couldn't
get their hands on the original so had to use the shortened single mix from
Complete/It's Madness Too.

Cardiac Arrest - covered

House Of Fun - My biggest frustration in life! The single is about 20
seconds longer than the version on Complete and Divine. It is completely
different in that it comes to a shuddering halt and fades out to Mike's
fairground-organ playing after playing the chorus for the third time, while
the horrible album version just fades out at the start of the 3rd play of
the chorus. Like Shut Up the single version is only on CD in America, with
the 1983 album, "Madness" the only CD in the world with it (apart from my
own "remastered" version done on the computer;-)).

Tomorrow's Just Another Day - No difference in the length, purely a change
of instrumentation in the play-out on the chorus. They took out what sounds
like a cornet or a high pitched sax and put in a some harmonica playng a
totally different part.

Hope that helps.

Cheers for now,
Peter
